An elegant & luminous C18th chateau familiale with earlier chateau forte & glorious grounds overlooking the river sarthe that remains a much loved home
On the border of the Orne and Sarthe region, on the banks of the meandering river of that name lies the Chateau De L'Isle. Rich in history the chateau is lived in by three generations of the Williams / Moorhouse family who are proud to call this wonderful domain their home. 'Tending the estate gives one the feeling of fulfilling a useful purpose and we thoroughly enjoy keeping this house and the estate as open and as welcoming as possible.'
This small estate spans just over 17 hectares of wonderfully undulating and varied Norman countryside and boasts a 1.5 km river frontage to the Sarthe. The architecture is full of surprises, two identical buildings face the courtyard with an even almost Palladian classical C17th and C18th style whilst the north east facade has ornate C19th embellishments, a terrace and two flights of steps leading down to the parterre, gardens and parkland.
Forests carpeted in bluebells and cyclamen, parkland covered in dancing jonquils and meadow flowers and a secluded walled garden flanked by towers, now used as a chapel and pigeonnier, an ancient moat, the soaring buzzards, wild boar, red deer, ancient oaks, tapping woodpeckers and enormous granite boulders twinkly with the infamous Alenconais diamonds collude to make this the most magical place to live.
